Top Causes of Air Conditioning Failures

Although most people don’t give their air conditioners a great deal of consideration on an average day, when it gets hot outside we all expect them to keep us nice and cool during the summer months. At Mason Heating & Air, we realize that A/C’s can be overlooked until they break down or they need some sort of repair work. This is why we are always available to help homeowners throughout the Warren County Area. After all, we depend on our cooling systems to perform faithfully within our own homes.

In that same style of customer service, we suggest the following list of some of the more common things to consider if you are having problems with your A/C.

Main Causes of Air Conditioner Failure

Lack of regular maintenance.

Regular, routine A/C maintenance is essential to your system’s lifespan and performance. Making an appointment with a licensed technician will help us identify problems before they become more serious issues. As part of our routine annual maintenance, our technicians clean your A/C coils and inspect your system. Forgetting to have your system properly maintained voids warranties from the A/C’s manufacturer.

Frozen A/C Coils.

Obstructed air filters (which need to be replaced frequently) or obstructed ductwork can cause airflow hindrances in your system, which can lead to frozen coils. Regularly cleaning or changing your air filter and keeping your ductwork free and clear are two essential rules to follow to prevent frozen coils.

Not Enough Refrigerant.

Cooling system refrigerants are hazardous. As such, any sort of leakage needs to be repaired and the refrigerant needs to be recharged by a licensed technician as soon as possible. If your refrigerant levels are low, your A/C won’t function properly.

Fan blade, Compressor, and electrical issues.

When an A/C compressor fails, it is often the result of underlying problems that are putting stress on the system. These problems could include dirty coils, low levels of refrigerant, electrical problems, fan blade issues, and more. As such, this is yet another reason why annual maintenance is so vital. Our technicians can identify worn out and damaged parts before you find yourself in need of emergency repairs.

Bad circuit breaker or fuse.

One of the first things to check if your A/C fails is your circuit breaker or its fuse. Be sure to give it 10 to 15 minutes to let your A/C cool. Then, replace the fuse or reset the breaker and find out if that’s the source of the problem. If this doesn’t fix the problem, you could have tripped your “high-pressure limit switch.” If that’s the case, we strongly recommend you give us a call.

Faulty thermostat.

If your home’s thermostat begins failing, your A/C usually cycles off and on constantly — or not at all. With this sort of problem, it’s a good time to consider getting a thermostat upgrade. Having us install a smart or programmable thermostat will pay for itself in no time with energy savings.
