With fall right around the corner, it is time for all homeowners to start getting their home cooling system prepared for winter. Even though the winters in Ohio can be inconstant, it is still crucial for the longevity of your AC unit to properly prepare it for the winter. Unfortunately, many homeowners tend to forget about their A/C unit since it is located outside and typically isn’t used during the winter. Ergo, before you begin to use your furnace for the following few months, some necessary steps need to be taken. Fortunately, our friendly and knowledgeable technicians at Mason Heating & Air have provided a couple of the most important actions you must take to prepare your AC for the winter to keep it in Five Star shape for next summer!
Turn Off Your A/C Correctly
Most homeowners don’t realize that your whole AC system goes deeper than just the equipment located outside. Besides that, just turning off your thermostat won’t get it ready for the harsh cold temperatures ahead. This means you need to shut your A/C down from the inside as well as the outside. If this gets overlooked, the condenser will continue to run, causing serious problems. So, to completely turn off your A/C and all of its parts, follow these following steps:
- Turn off your thermostat completely.
- Locate your home residential breaker box.
- Switch the fuse to “off” that is connected to your outside A/C unit.
When you do this, it will turn off all the power connected to your outside AC unit, letting you safely turn on your “heat” when the winter comes full force.
Clean & Inspect Condenser Unit
Additionally, you will want to clean and inspect the condenser, which you will find with your A/C unit located outside. Most homeowners like to get this done before the cold weather brings snow and ice on and around your AC unit. The easiest way to clean your A/C unit is to use a hose to remove all the dirt, leaves, bugs, and debris inside and around your unit.
Next, you will want to carefully inspect your AC for any cracks or rust. If you see anything that looks problematic, contact Mason Heating & Air as soon as possible. However, if everything looks in Five Star shape, cover your unit, and you are good to go for winter!
